Society for Science Advocacy “Science and the World” was founded in 2017 and is an independent, non-governmental, non-partisan, non-religious and non-profit association that advocates for the development of science and education, promotion of science and scientific literacy, media and information literacy, affirmation of human rights and civil society. The association “Science and the World” promotes natural (basic, applied and developmental sciences), but also social sciences through scientific communication and scientific journalism, works on the development of scientific journalism in BiH and the region through the website Science Speaks and related channels of social networks and podcasts, and promotes extracurricular education of youth and adults. The association also works to combat disinformation related to science and deals with the relationship between science, democracy, politics and society.

The very name of the website “Science Speaks” was created as a product of collaboration with UG “Why not?/Raskrinkavanje when we developed the hashtag #NaukaGovori for the purposes of public information about COVID-19 and vaccines.

Mission

The Society for the Promotion of Natural Sciences “Science and the World” was founded in 2017 and is an independent, non-governmental, non-partisan, non-religious and non-profit association that supports the development of science and education, the promotion of science and science literacy, and the affirmation of human rights and civil society.
The name of the association is a tribute to BiH academician prof. Ljubomir Berberović, Ph.D., whose one of his books is titled “Science and the World”. Until his death, Academician Berberović was an honorary member of the Association “Science and the World” and his public activity is a model for the Association.
The mission of the Association “Science and the World” is to bring closer and popularize science, processes in science, scientific achievements and education for a better, healthier and knowledge-protected world through open, clear and understandable communication. “Science and the World” is a civil society organization dedicated to the development of scientific journalism and scientific communication. The organization's activities include: improving scienceliteracy, combating misinformation, popularizing science via this website and via social media.

The association deals with issues of history of science philosophy of science and the relationship between science, society, politics and democracy.

The “Science and the World” is registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ministry of Justice of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a legal entity. However, the region of activity of the Association “Science and the World” is wider and covers the same language area of the countries created by the breakup of Yugoslavia-BiH, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia, as well as the diaspora of these countries. The association is open to cooperation with other legal entities and individuals with similar goals.

Gender Equality Plan (GEP) and Strategy for the Society for the Promotion of Natural Sciences “Nauka i svijet”

  1. This is a public document that outlines the institutional commitment of the Society for the Promotion of Natural Sciences “Nauka i svijet” to promoting gender equality. The Society recognizes the importance of gender equality in science, education, and digital transformation. This GEP is an official document signed by the leadership and available on the Society's website.
  2. Dedicated Resources and Expertise To implement the GEP, the Society allocates appropriate resources and engages experts in gender equality. Through its activities and projects, it involves specialists who ensure the implementation of gender-sensitive approaches.
  3. Data Collection and Monitoring The Society “Nauka i svijet” currently has a small number of employees but collaborates with many associates and occasional volunteers. It maintains statistics and monitors indicators of gender representation.
  4. Training and Awareness-Raising The Society organizes training and workshops on gender equality, unconscious biases, and inclusion for staff and decision-makers. The goal is continuous education and raising awareness of the importance of gender equality in all aspects of work. We have a memorandum of cooperation and understanding with the Sarajevo Open Centre (SOC), which focuses on gender issues, and we occasionally collaborate with them either as participants or trainers in their gender equality programs.
  5. PSEA / Prevention of Sexual Exploatation and Abuse Strategy developed, including monitoring, case reporting and reaction.
  6. Code of Conduct and Statute of our organization include Gender Equality.

Thematic Areas and Concrete Measures:

  • Work-Life Balance and Organizational Culture: 1)Flexible working conditions that allow better alignment of professional and personal obligations. 2) Activities that promote an inclusive and equal working environment.
  • Gender Balance in Leadership and Decision-Making: Encouraging women to take leadership positions through mentorship and education. The Society “Nauka i svijet” is a women-led organization, with women occupying all key leadership and administrative positions. o Transparent leadership selection processes.
  • Gender Equality in Recruitment and Career Progression:  Equal conditions and criteria for employment and professional development. o Active support for women in science and technology through empowerment programs.
  • Integration of the Gender Dimension into Research and Educational Content: 1)Development of programs that incorporate gender-sensitive approaches in science communication and digital literacy. 2) Promotion of research that considers gender differences and perspectives.
  • Measures Against Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Harassment: 1) The Society has adopted PSEA policies (Policies on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment), developed according to UNICEF standards from 2022. o Clear reporting mechanisms and victim protection measures. 2) The president holds a PSEA certification from UNICEF (April 2022). 3) Mandatory training for staff and partners on preventing and responding to gender-based violence, held annually.

The Society “Nauka i svijet” remains committed to implementing and improving the GEP, aiming to achieve lasting gender equality and inclusivity in science communication and digital transformation.

Additionally, through its activities, the Society actively promotes women in science and technology (STEM/STEAM) and creates materials that increase the visibility of women in these fields, as well as individuals from the LGBTIQ community.
